• D.3.2 Cavity Dimensi
The size and shape of each solution-mined cavity will vary, with time.
the cavity shape is presented in an idealized manner,
The actual cavity shape will be verified as the Pilot Plant operations
proceed. The Bulk Sampling Program involved the extraction of only 150 to
200 tons of nahcolite, hence judgments as to the ultimate shape of the
cavity at maturity can not be made until approximately 9 to 12 months after
Pilot Plant start-up.
D.3.3 Water Diversions and Impoundments
Water produced during drilling will be directed to a lined retention pond.
This provision is intended to allow space for drill cuttings to accumulate
and to retain water if the quality does not meet discharge limitations.
Water will be direct~ad to the pond through pipes, and the pond over-flow
• will be directed to the drainage in a 12-inch diameter pipe to prevent
erosion. Rock rip-rap will be installed in the drainage at the pond
discharge point to prevent excessive cutting and erosion in the drainage.
IRI will apply for an NPDES permit in October 1983, to allow surface
discharge of water produced during drilling. This water will contain minor
amounts (approximately 100-ppm) of foaming agent. The foaming agent,
required to clear cuttings from the hole during drilling, is a non-toxic and
biodegradable product produced by Sooner Chemical.
D.3.4 Retention Pond
An existing 50-feet by 100-feet by 12-feet deep retention pond will be
upgraded to receive water produced during drilling. The pond is a balanced
cut and fill construction. Earthen berms will be compacted to 90 percent of
maximum density (ASTM-1557). Liner bedding material, consisting of rock
free on-site earthen material will be placed prior to the installation of a
new 20-mill PVC pond liner. The pond discharges through a 12-inch diameter
plastic pipe to the dry drainage. A valve has been installed on the
D-3
