• <br />• <br />• <br />While the mine is located in Gunnison County, only six percent of the <br />workforce resides in that county. Somerset Se the principal town in Gunnison <br />County that is home to Hawke Nest employees, accounting for 5.39 of the <br />workforce. Undoubtedly, the absence of roads directly connecting the mine to <br />Gunnison County could be viewed ns a primary reason the workforce is <br />concentrated in Delta County. In short, the geographic barrier created by the <br />lack of year-round roads is, in part, responsible for Hawk's Nest workforce <br />residing in Delta County. <br />Thus, the following chapter outlines the historical-current status of Delta <br />and Gunnison Counties, paying particular attention to the towns that house the <br />majority of Hawk's Nest employe ea: Paonia, Hotchkiss, Delta, and Crawford. <br />Three areas will be specifically addressed in Chapters III and IV to comply <br />with comments received from the Office of Surface Mining in Denver: <br />• Hawk's Nest workforce levels and settlement patterns; <br />• impact of the workforce on the communities; and <br />• Coal transportation modes and destination. <br />4 <br />
