• almost 21,000 population for a ratio of 1:1400 (physicians to people).
This ratio is less than the Western Colorado Health Systems Agency's
guideline of 1:1600 for the suggested availability of physicians. Western
Slope's expansion will minimally impact physician need, considering the
addition of only 257 people.
6. Fire Protection
A5 indicated in Chapter II, Page 23, the fire districts have the capacity
to handle additional population.
7. Education
Given the settlement patterns and demographics of Table IV-1, then the
Hawk's Nest expansion will increase the number of children by approxi-
mately 123. Dying the student:teacher ratio of one teacher per 25
• students, then Paonia schools would require an additional 1.3 teachers,
Hotchkiss .76, and Delta 2.3. If the students nre of elementary age, the
existing school capacities would be insufficient as noted in Table rv-2.
8. Streets/Roads/Transportation
The ground transportation system will incur the greater strain from
continued growth. Town streets and connecting roads are currently in need
of repair] the addition of 257 people could exacerbate the decaying road
situation. The direct employees, at worse, will create an additional 62
trips per day to the mine. This could contribute to the current
congestion problem on SH-133. The planned improvements to SH-133 will
alleviate much of this problem. However, since this is a 10 to 20 year
project, in the interim Western Slope Carbon Corporation will continue to
support a busing program for all employees who avail themselves of this
bus service. (Western Slope Carbon pays 508 of the bus fare under this
program.) in addition, shift change times ere being coordinated with
other mines to reduce potential congestion on SH-133.
•
54
