' PRELIMINARY REPORT <br />GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION <br />HAWK'S NEST MINE <br />' DELTA COUNTY LANDFILL <br />COAL PROCESS WASTE DISPOSAL PIT N0. 6 <br />HOTCHKISS, COLORADO <br />FOR WESTERN SLOPE CARBON, INC. <br />' INTRODUCTION <br />' This report presents the preliminary results of our geotechnical investigation <br /> of the captioned site. The report is to be used as background information for <br /> a Coal Waste Disposal Site Operation and Reclamation Plan being prepared by <br />' Western Slope Carbon to fulfill the requirements of the Mined Land Reclamation <br /> Division (CMLRB) of the State of Colorado Department of Natural Resources. The <br />' scope of our investigation was developed in consultation with Messrs. Al Amundson, <br /> Von McAllister, and Mark Humphrey of Western Slope Carbon. <br />' This report describes our understanding of the conditions at the site and the <br /> proposed construction, as well as, the purpose of our investigation. It then <br /> describes the services performed, interprets our findings, and presents our <br /> conclusions and recommendations. <br /> SITE CONDITIONS AND PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION <br />' Pit No. 6 is located in west central Colorado, approximately two miles east <br /> of the community of Hotchkiss in Delta County. Specifically, it is located <br /> about 3000 feet east and 2300 feet south on the northwest corner of Section <br />' 28, Range 92 West, Township 14 South, of the Sixth Principal Meridian and <br /> Base Line. Access to the site is provided by the Delta County Landfill <br />' Road off State Highway 92 south of Hotchkiss. Figure 1, Vicinity Map, shows <br /> the site location, regional topography, and features in the vicinity. The <br />' site is about 18.9 acres in plan area and is situated on gently sloping terrain <br /> along the western margin of the North Fork Gunnison River Valley. It occupies <br />' nearly all of a small drainage basin which has an area of about 25 acres. <br /> Elevations vary from 5450 feet along the western site boundary to about 5520 <br /> feet along the northern and eastern boundaries. The terrain is gently rolling <br />' with a general slope downward toward the west. Two unnamed, ephemeral stream <br /> channels, tributary to Cottonwood Creek, drain the site in a westerly direction. <br />' Site vegetation is sparse and generally consists of native grasses and scattered <br /> brush. The site is flanked to the south and southeast by the existing Western <br />
