The soil presently being mined <br />for clay is MO DF (Varner-Rock outcrop colmplex). The surface layer, about 2 inches <br />thick, is grayish brown, stoney loam. The subsoil is reddish brown, stoney, heary <br />clay loam. Light reddish brown fractured sandstone underlies at 12 inches or less. <br />Scattered, scraggly ponderosa pine trees grow on the site. An overburden of 15-20 <br />feet of sandstone is being blasted av$y to reach the claw deposit. <br />SUGGESTED SOLUTION(S) During the mining operation, all salvageable soil and fine <br />materials will be stockpiled. 4lhen an area is mined out, it will be smoothed doxn <br />and the soil material will be spread on the surface, leaving as much soil depth as <br />possible. Fertiliser containing at least 40 pounds of nitrogen and 40 pounds of <br />phosphate, should be applied 3ust prior to seeding, and a mixture of 5 pounds pure <br />live seed per acre fairway wheatgrass and 1 pound PLS/acre yellox aveetclover should <br />be drilled to a depth of one-half inch. Drilling should be done across the slope <br />as such as possible. Seeding should be done between September 1$ and October 1$, or <br />between March 1 and June 15. I~+lediately after drillinrt. the area should be <br />covered rich 4,000 pounds per acre of cereal atrax or grass for sulch, with at least <br />half of the sulcb material at least ten inches long.
