United States Department of Agriculture
0 MRCS
Natural Resources Conservation Service
1475 Pine Grove Road, Sude 201A
Steamboat Springs, GO 80487
May 16, 2002
Greg Lewicki & Assoc.
9054 S. Forrest Drive
Highlands Ranch, CO 80126
303-346-5196
Dear Greg,
970.879.3225-0FFICE
970-87&2517-FAX
I am writing this letter to address the species diversity issue at the reclaimed Apex #2
Mine site located on Trout Creek in Routt County.
The owner requested that only timothy, orchard grass, smooth brome and no shrubs be
planted. Last year the site had around 44% ground cover but the site didn't have the
species diversity standard that the DMG once required. However, with the landowners
post mining use of livestock grazing, the existing cover and production protects the site
from erosion and produces enough forage to meet the landowners needs.
With the above factors, I would recommend that the relative species diversity standard
be reduced for this site because of the landowners request for three specific introduced
species and the post mining use of livestock grazing.
Sincerely submitted,
~n
Patrick Davey
District Conservationist
Tne Natural Resource Conservation Service works in partnership with the American People
W conserve and sustain naWral resources on private lantls.
