It is a practical classifcation based <br />limitations of the sail, tl-.e rill: of damage when they are used ar~d the way the' <br />respond to treatment. The soils are classified according to degree and kind o <br />permanent limitation, but witF,~,ut consideration of major and general er.pensive <br />landforrni.ng that would change the slope, deptY~, r~r^ other characteristics of ttr <br />soils; and without cor~dideration of possible t,ut unlikely major recarnation <br />projects. <br />Fornan umerals are used to stow the '~ broad Capability Classes and letters foll <br />the class numeral tr, indicataed the principal prat~lern or hazard. Classes and <br />sub-classes used ar-e as follows: <br />Class I - Few or no limitations that restrict choice of crops or require <br />conservation measures. <br />Class II - Some limitations that reduce the choice of crops or require rnoderat <br />conservation measures. <br />Class III - Severe lirnitatior~s that reduce choice of craps ar require special <br />conservation practices or both. <br />lass IV - Very severe lirnitatior~ that restrict: the ct~oic of crops, require vei <br />areful management, ar both. <br />Class V - Not suited for cultivation but has few or rya hazards when used far <br />pasuture, range, woodland ar wildlife. <br />Class VI - Nat suited for cultivation. Very severe limitations. Suited for <br />range, pasture, woodland ar wildlife with careful rnanagernent and needed <br />conseravtion practices. <br />Class VII - Not suited for cultivation. very severe limitations. Suited far <br />range, woodland or wildlife use if carefully managed. Usually cannot apply <br />physical practices such as pitting, furrowing seeding, etc. <br />Cass VIII - Not suited for cultivation, range, pasture or woodland. Suited onl•, <br />for recreation, wildlife, water supply esthetic purposses. <br />e - Erosion I?y w i nd or water i s the rna,iar Arab I ern <br />w - E;:cessive water such as wetness, overflow ..r high water table. <br />s - Major problem is in the sail. It may be to shallow, too Freavy, stony, low i <br />fertility, salty, alkaline or gave law moisture capacity. <br />c - Climate is the major- hazard. Gr-awing season may be very short, they is a <br />shortage of rainfall or both. <br />Examples: <br />• IIIe - Class III land where erosion is the major hazard. <br />IVc - Glass IV land where the climate is the major problem. <br />
