Jack Clark
WESTEC
5600 S. Quebec Street, Suite 307D
Englewood. Colorado 80111
Dear Mr. Clark:
On January 28, 1997, you sent a letter requesting a species list for mining
operations near Somerset, Colorado. The proposed mining area is in T. 13 S.,
R. 90 W., sections 13 through 30, Gunnison County.
• There are several federally listed species that could occur in the area or be
impacted by mining operations. These are the threatened bald eagle
(Haliaeetus leucocephalus) and the endangered southwestern willow flycatcher
(fmpidonax traillii extimus), Colorado squawfish (Ptychocheilus Lucius),
bonytail (Gila elegans), humpback chub (Gila cypha), and razorback sucker
(Xyrauchen texanus). Additionally, the boreal toad (Bufo boreas boreas), a
candidate species, could occur in the area.
There are no known bald eagle nests in the area; however, bald eagles may
inhabit areas along the North Fork of the Gunnison especially during the
winter. The southwestern willow flycatcher inhabits riparian areas and may be
impacted if mining occurs in or near riparian corridors. The endangered
fishes may be impacted if mining operations deplete water from the Upper
Colorado River Basin which includes the North Fork of the Gunnison. The
boreal toad may be impacted if mining occurs in wetland/riparian areas above
8,000 feet.
•
