. Water inflows at the New Elk Mine have
averaged approximately 123 gallons per minute.
Of that amount, approximately 88 gpm is being
generated from minedout areas totalling
approximately 2800 aces. The northerly half of
that acreage is under the Purgatoire River and the
southerly half is under Apache Canyon. !t is
impossible to determine how much is from
groundwater sources; however, is appears evident
that this small drainage rate from a large
undermined area should not reflect material
impact of water available to overlying isolated
alluvial aquifers or the overall hydrologic regime
of the area.
Using empiripl data resulting hom the New
Elk inflow study and observations of subsidence
impacts, it can be projected that impacts on the
regional hydrologic system resulting from future
secondary and retreat mining at the Golden Eagle
Mine will be similarly insignificant. This
projection is also supported by the contention
that Santistevan Canyon does not contain an
alluvial aquifer and that the overlying strata does
not contain significant aquifers.
C1
•
