Walther
Executive Director
Michael B. Long
Division Director
I have received your request for extension of the last corrective action to be completed at the above-named pit. The
request is for an extension from the current October 31, 2001, date to a revised date of December 15, 2001. The
corrective action is to replace the dead trees in the screen on the north end. You state that your Vee supplier has
suggested that better survival of the potted trees may be ensured by postponing the planting date until the trees have
shed their leaves arld aze dormant, which is after the current correction date.
The Division agrees with this justification for delaying the planting date. "Phis request for extending the corrective
action date is therefore approved. The new date is now set for December 15. 2001.
1 hope you received the copies I recently sent you of the conditions agreed to by United Companies during the
conferences in 1994. The tree row in question, across the north end of the permit, is to be 430 feet in length. This
correlates to the length of the visual bernt which lies within 200 feet of the Becker residence. Please ensure that
enough trees are planted, and in the correct locations. Also, please ensure that the specifications for the earthen
visual berm are met (height, slope gradient, and seeded). These will be topics to be inspected closely th the future.
The file for this site has been forwarded to the Division's staff in the Grand ]unction field office. Your written
follow-up regarding the completion of this corrective action, or for questions about other sites in Montrose, Delta,
or Mesa Counties, should be made by contacting that office directly. Please call Steve Shuey at 243-6368 or Russ
Means at 241-I 117. Their office is at 101 South 3rd Street, Room 301, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
1 will still be your contact, however, for the one permitted site (plus future ones) in Gumrison County. I may be
reached at the Division's Durango field office: 701 Canuno del Rio, Room 125, Durango, CO 81301; tel 970/247-
5 l93 or fax 970/247-5104.
Thank you for your cooperation in correcting the problems noted during the last inspection.
Sincerely,
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
a:lcolona tree exT01/rco
