Official Series Description - MINQWET Series <br />Buffalo Stone Quarry <br />Page ' ~ <br />Attachment 5 <br />Cederpass soils: do not have a pazalithic contact. <br />• GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: <br />Parent materiaL• loess mixed with residuum derived from soft shale and limestone <br />Landform: plains, ridges, hills, pediments. <br />Slopes: 1 to 10 percent <br />Elevation: 5,000 to 6,500 feet <br />Mean annual temperature: 50 to 54 degrees F <br />Mean annual precipitation: 14 to 16 inches <br />Precipitation pattern: peak periods May through August, driest December through February. <br />Frost-free period: 120 to 160 days. <br />GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Penrose, Ritoazul, and Wilev series. <br />The Penrose soils aze less than 20 inches to a lithic contact and are on scarps. The Ritoazul soils average <br />more than 35 percent clay and are on fans and pediments. The Wiley soils aze very deep and aze on fans <br />and plains. <br />DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, low runoff on slopes of 1 to 5 percent and <br />medium on slopes of 5 to 10 percent, moderate to moderately slow permeability. <br />USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used as rangeland; native vegetation is blue grams, western <br />wheatgrass, needlegrass, red threeawn, broon snakeweed, and bottlebrush squirreltail. <br />DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: southeastern Colorado; LRR G, MI,RA 67; the soil is of moderate <br />• extent. <br />MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas <br />SERIES PROPOSED: Las Animas County, Colorado, Las Animas County Area soil survey area, <br />Colorado. The name is coined from a higher moisture phase of the Minnequa series. <br />REMARKS: <br />Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon aze: <br />Particle-size control section: The zone from 10 to 30 inches. (part of the Bwl, Bw2, and Bky horizons) <br />Ochric epipedon: The zone from 0 to 6 inches. (A horizons) <br />Cambic horizon: The zone from 6 to 21 inches. (Bwl and Bw2 horizons) <br />Paralithic contact: The contact with shale and soft limestone at 30 inches.
