• A point-by-point response to camients raised by CDGW (William D.
Clark, CDGW biologist, March 3, 1981 letter to Ms. S.L. Emrich,
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division) concerning the wildlife
baseline report developed by Mariah Associates for Peabody Coal
Comq~any's Seneca. II Mine is provided below. The original report
has been modified where necessary to address CDGW comtnents.
Comment 1 .(page 6) "Criterion 15 deals with state resident
fish and game. Falcons, eagles and other raptors are vari-
ously covered by criterion 9-14."
Response .The text has been changed to reflect the above.
Comment 2 :..(page 7) "If possible, identify the CDCW biologist
referred to throughout the report in upland game bird dis-
cussion. .It is probable that this was Don Hoffman, CDDW
• researcher (REt.)."
Response The CDOA biologist is Jim Hicks, Steamboat Springs
CDOW office. All references to a CROW biologist in the
baseline report have been revised to include Jim Hicks'
name and CDOW office.
Comment 3 :. (page 8) "CDDW biologists spend a great deal of time
cronducting aerial surveys. it is our opinion that sex and
age information for big game ungulates is difficult if not
in~ossible to accurately assess in a fixed-wing aircraft. We
are suspect of any information on age and sex collected from
fixed-wing aircraft."
Response We agree. We only record sex and age if characteristics
that permit positive confirmation of sex or age are present
(e.g., antlers). The statement in question has been revised
to read, "...all animiaLs spotted according to species, habitat
type and if possible, sex and age."
C ;
11-1-1
