Mayo and Assoelales, LC
the well screen is Duly 50 fee[ below ground surface, the well hydrograph, described below,
shows both seasonal and climatic variability, and the water in the well contains
anthropogenic "C.
The B-, E-, and F-Seam cluster, which generally plots below the MWL, has the most
negative plotting location. Mean S'H and 5180 compositions of this cluster are -16.78 and -
128.0%0, respectively. The Barren Member well and in-mine Rollins Sandstone cluster plots
intermediate between the previously described clusters. The mean S'-H and 5180
compositions of the in-mine Rollins Sandstone waters are -16.2 and -120.9%0, respectively.
The mean SZH and 5160 compositions of the Barren Member wells are -16.1 and -121.4%0,
respectively.
•
Statistical differences in the means of the clusters were evaluated using t-tests (Table 4),
which demonstrates that the three clusters are statistically distinguishable from each other.
Test results are listed for the 95% confidence interval.
4.4.2 Discussion
Because the stable isotopic compositions of surface and groundwaters were set at the time of
precipitation, as described above, each plotting cluster likely represents recharge occumng
under different paleoclimatic conditions. The stable isotopic compositions also suggest that
the groundwater systems are compartmentalized and that there is not active hydraulic
communication between near surface groundwaters, which discharge as springs, and
. groundwaters found at depth.
Characterization of Groundwater Systems in the Vicinity of the West Elk Mine, Somerset, Colorado
29 January 1999
Page 54
