We have had further contact with Daren Stone including a Meld
visit and letter which have answered our concerns expressed to your
agency. The following is our amended recommendations or notes of
agreement with the mineral owner.
Recommer.:3ation #1 -Only enough fencing to control road access to
the pit area is acceptable to BLM, This allows the rest of the
surface uses to continue and access to remain open to the rest of
the SLM land, Protection fencing can be installed later around the
reseeded areas to allow for reclamation.
Re=ommendation #2 - Mr. stone stated that he recognizes weeds as a
problem, and should be required to Control weeds. We will wort.
together to limit the infestation and possible spread of weeds from
the gravel operation.
Recommendation #3 - The use of pit run material to build up a
crowned and graded road satisfies our concern over mud, erosion and
further degradation of the SLM surface.
Recommendation #4 - no change, agreement.
Recommendation #5 - We appreciate Mr. Stone's sensitivity to
cultural resource protection and his cooperative spirit in helping
our agency to protect these resources. We have flagged the site
for interim protection (with Mr. S.tone's assistance) and will work
together cooperatively to evaluate the site's significance and
complete any mitigation that is deemed necessary (in consultation
with the Colorado State Historic Preservation Office and the
President's Advisory Couneil on Historic Preservation).
