This report :ill relate the cultural resources in the total <br />• Colorado 1,lestmoreland project [o Impact Areas A, B, and C. <br />The second area of activity at the Orchard Valley Mine is referred <br />to as Impact Area 6 (Figs. 2 L 4) and focuses about a railroad spur, <br />three coal storage silos and a unit train loading facility. This com- <br />plex is located on private land and centers roughly three miles southeast <br />of the mine site and about tr+o miles east of Paonia on [hc north bank <br />of the North Fork of the Gunnison (Fig 2). <br />A conveyor system will eventually transport coal from [he mine on <br />the mountainside in Area A, doa+nslope to the storage facilities of Area B <br />on the Valley Fleor. The riyh[-of-~•+ay for this conveyor crosses both <br />i private and federal lands. This right-of-way has been designated as <br />Impact Arca C (Fig. 2). <br />• Centuries Research, Inc. was contracted by Thorne Institute to com- <br />•, plete a detailed cultural resource survey of approximately 2,560 acres of <br />• federally owned and private surface lands in Area A (Fig. 2). This area <br />includes Bureau of Land htanagemen[ ground and the private holdings on <br />which the mine o-+or4;ings are situated. This area extends north from the <br />mine to [hc boundary of the Gunnison ~:ational Forest. The immediate im- <br />pact zone of Area A includes sections I, 12, 13 and 24 of R 92 W and <br />T 13 5. With the e:.;ception of section 1, these parcels are owned by John <br />Morrell,of Paonia and ~+ill be impacted by construction of fourteen drill <br />pads, their access roads, and a water line as indicaCed in Finure 2. <br />Colorado l•!es[moreland wishes to mine the federally controlled coal beneath <br />[he four nicntioned sections and needs to complete core drilling operations <br />in order [o test [he nature and extent of the federally oo-mad deposits.
