F,CKNOWLEDGIIENTS <br />Several individuals and organizations have been helpful in prepa- <br />ration of the present report, and the author therefore r•~ishes to acknow- <br />edge their aid. Bud Ogden, Tim Manley, Don Geddes, and Royce McRobbie <br />and other staff of Colorado Westmoreland, Inc. provided miscellaneous <br />data and were particularly helpful in orienting us to the needs of Colo- <br />rado Westmoreland and to [he local study area. Dr. Douglas Scott, District <br />Archaeoloyist for the Bureau of Land 1lanagemen[, was, as always, particu- <br />larly helpful in rooting out details of the local land patents and pro- <br />viding general cor,ments and criticism. Mrs. Shirley Lund of the Paonia <br />Public Library led us [o important historical materials on the- local area, <br />and i1 r. 'dallace Eubanks of the: North Fork Historical Society loaned us the <br />• original glass negatives for various historical photos included in [he <br />report. Particular thanks are extended to Laura and John Morrell for in- <br />formation on homesteading in Stevens Gulch, the loan of photographs, and <br />for permission to investigate sites on their property. Helen `lorgan was <br />also helpful in filling in details on early ranching activity in [lie area. <br />Mrs. Laura Clock of Paonia led us to local informants, and Hrs. Eleanor <br />Bencich of Paonia allowed us to examine sites on her property and helped <br />with details of her family history. Especially helpful r,~as Mr. Harold <br />Hammond of Paonia, who drew upon his lifelonn residence in the local <br />area and lent a clear and refreshingly cogent historical focus [o this <br />study of the 'lorth Fork Country.
