• <br />INTRODUCTION <br />From August 4 through August 8, 1980, an intensive cultural resources <br />survey of all but the steepest portions of 840 acres of the surface <br />overlying Colorado Westmoreland's Lease No. C-27432 north of Paonia in <br />Delta County was performed (Figure I). Survey was done by a four-person <br />crew from Centuries Research, Inc., of Montrose, Colorado, under the <br />direction of the author, for Colorado Westmoreland Inc., of Paonia, <br />Colorado. Survey was carried out under the provisions of Federal <br />Antiquities Permit 80-CO-041 which expires 3/12/81. Survey was per- <br />formed [o assess the impact of possible subsidence upon cultural re- <br />sources due to underground mining activities. The area involved in- <br />cludes portions of Sections 12 and 13, T. 13 S., R. 92 W., and Sections <br />• 17 and 18, T. 13 S., R. 91 W. (Figure 2). Colorado Westmoreland (CWI) is <br />the owner of all surface within Lease C-27432 except the E1/2, W1/2, Section <br />18, T. 13 S., R. 91 W., owned by the Bureau of Land Management. All the <br />coal to be tuned is Federal coal leased to CWI. <br />C~ <br />3 <br />
