Description:
Condition: ruins; unaltered; original site.
The present site consists of the stone pilings for the gravity tram
trestle, ,^'' ~'~° ,' ~'
Originally the mine consisted of a small shed, the mine itself, a gravity
powered. tram trestle and probably a loading facility a[ the end of the
tramline. The large trestle was built in 1912 or 1913 for Cowan by
C. A. Carlson. The trestle promptly began to fall out of alignment, and
the cart rails rapidly developed obvious distortion.
Today all that is visible of [he Cavan operation are the dry laid stone
foundations of the trestle. These are impressive in themselves and are
a suitable monument to the engineering ability of an earlier generation.
Ftuch of the rest of the site has been disturbed by many years of mining
activity at the nearby Orchard Valley Mine.
J
6
