INTRODUCTION
On June 3, 1982, Centuries Research Inc. performed a cultural resource
survey of eleven drill sites, numbers 60, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 70,
71, 72 and 73, and the associated access roads for drill sites 63 and
65. The survey was requested by Ms. Patricia Farnsworth of Colorado
Westmoreland of Paonia, Colorado. Fieldwork was performed by Laurie D.
Webster, Staff Archaeologist at Centuries Research Inc. The survey area
included portions of Sections 7, 8, 17 and 18, Township 13 South, Range
91 t:est; and Sections 11, 14 and 15, Township 13 South, Range 92 West,
6th P.M. The project area lies in Delta County, in the Uncompahgre
Resource Area of the tontrose District of the Bureau of Land Management.
The survey area is located on the southeast flank of Grand Mesa, above
the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The drill sites are located
within two major groupings: sites 70 through 73 are situated on the
slopes of a major ridge bordered by Terror Creek on the east and Stevens
Gulch on the west (see Figure 1). Elevation of these sites ranges from
1,280 feet (N70) to 7,960 feet (N73).
The remaining sites, •60 and 63 through 68, are situated on a ridge
bordered by Stevens Gulch to the east and West Roatcap Creek to the west
(see Figure 2). East Roatcap Creek bisects this area. Elevations of
these drill sites range from 7,760 feet (k67) to 8,240 feet (~64 and
65).
Vegetation at all drill sites is dominated by oak brush uercus gambelii),
with stands of aspen Po ulus tremuloides) appearing in flatter, more
open terrain. Soils are a rocky sandy loam, with basalt cobbles and
boulders scattered over the area. Slope at the sites varied between 5°
and 20°.
Prior to performance of fieldwork, a prefield check was conducted at the
BLM District Office in Montrose on June 2, 1982. This report and field
inspection were completed to n~eet the requirements of applicable historic
preservation laws and Executive Order 11593. All work was performed
under the provisions of BLM Federal Antiquities Permit t"82-CO-175, which
expires on April 11, 1985.
SURVEY h1ETHODOLOGY
All drill sites and access roads were staked and flagged at the time of
survey.
