The Pazachute site will have one monitoring well. The groundwater
monitoring procedures aze described in Section 3.0.
2.1 Yankee Gulch Lease Site
American Soda will use a network of 24 monitoring well completions (as detailed in
Figure 1) to monitor ground water quality and water levels at the Yankee Gulch site for the 0-5 yeaz
mine panel. The Upper Aquifer will be monitored by 11 different monitoring well completions, and
the Lower Aquifer will be monitored by 9 monitoring well completions. The alluvial aquifer will
be monitored by 4 monitoring wells. In addition to the 10 existing monitoring wells, American Soda
will construct 3 new multiple-completion monitoring wells and 3 new alluvium monitoring wells.
Two of the proposed alluvium monitoring wells and an existing monitoring well will monitor the
Alluvial Aquifer adjacent to Piceance Creek. A fourth alluvium monitoring well will be completed
downstream of the proposed upper plant settling pond to monitor for dischazge from the pond.
To assure complete monitoring of the Upper and Lower Aquifers, each of these aquifers will
be monitored in two stratigraphic locations. Monitoring wells installed in the Upper Aquifer will
be completed with screened intervals either neaz the base of the Uinta Formation or within (or
immediately above) the A Groove. Monitoring wells installed in the Lower Aquifer will be
completed with screened intervals either in the B Groove or just above the Dissolution Surface.
Alluvial aquifer monitoring wells will be located along the eastern boundary of the portion of the
Yankee Gulch Lease that lies west of Piceance Creek.
The monitoring well layout for the Yankee Gulch lease site is described in Section 2.1 and
shown on Figure I . Figure 2 is a generalized stratigraphic column showing aquifer locations and
important stratigraphic horizons. Monitoring well completion diagrams aze presented in
Appendix A. The monitoring wells will be positioned up-gradient, down-gradient, and cross-
gradient ofthe mine panel. American Soda has proposed this well configuration for the first panel
to assure that potential impacts to groundwater and surface water will be detected. In addition, there
aze monitoring wells and production wells within the 0-5 yeaz mine panel that will be part of the
monitoring well network.
Agapito Associates, Inc.
