•
L J
3`~
2.04.3 SITE DESCRIPTION AND LAND USE INFORMATION
(1) and (2) The Peacock Coal Mine has been in existence
since approximately 1905 and has generally been in production
since that time to supply coal for local users. The land affect-
ed by surface operations has long beer: devoted to coal mining
operations. The affected land, prior to mining, was native range
land. The applicant will employ the services of a local land
use planner to produce a description of enviromental resources
that may be affected, and a land use map and narrative of capa-
bility and productivity.
(3) Portions of the proposed permit area have been pre-
viously mined.
(a) Previous mining has been underground by the standard
room and pillar method.
(b) The Peerless seam of the Menefee formation has
been previously mined.
(c) The extent of coal or other minerals removed is
approximately 75,000 tons.
(d) Mining began in approximately 1905, and has gener-
ally been continuous to the present time. However, 73,000
tons were removed prior to 1975.
(e) The uses of the land preceeding mining included
natural range land and wildlife habitat.
(f) The location and extent of acreage disturbed by
previous surface mining operations correspond roughly with pro-
posed operations, except that proposed operations will reduce
the disturbed areas from those historically disturbed. The
historically disturbed areas and disturbed areas of proposed
operations will be shown on a land use rnap prepared pursuant to
2.04.3(2).
(4) No local land use classification or planning exists
for the proposed permit area. Historically, the permit area and
surrounding land has been used for coal mining and ranching.
20 -
