State Reg.
• etc.). Map unit names contained in the S.C.S, legend (1977) and used later
by Fly and Associates (1979) in the surrounding Seneca Mine disturbance
area were correlated to the 4-40's soils. The map unit boundary lines for the
4-40's area were transferred to high quality black and white stereo prints
that were flown July II, 1971. Soil boundaries were refined in an office
photo-interpretive study using a mirror stereoscope. The map units were
joined to the Claude Fly and Associates survey of 1979. The refined
mapping was then transferred to a revised and updated I" = 400' topographic
base map. Slope designations were rechecked from This base.
V. SURVEY RESULTS
Three soil series were identified within the 4-40's soil survey area (see
Exhibit 9-I).. These included X8:Winevada and SpliTro loam complex, 5 To
40% slopes and 66:Skylick clay looms, 5 to 40% slopes. The Winevada-
Splitro soils are shallow to moderately deep over sandstone bedrock. Small
. areas of sandstone outcrops and other localized regions of deep soil over
sandstone bedrock are included within this map unit. The Skylick soils are
deep and occupy drainages and concave slopes landscapes. They have
formed from mixed parent materials including fine-grained sandstones and
shales. They often have developed near the Wadge and Wolf Creek coal
outcrops.
Field soil profile in conjunction with laboratory analysis data are included
for the Splitro, Winevada, and Skylick soils (Tables 9-2-I through 9-2-5).
These pedon descriptions are very similar to those collected by Fly during
the 1977 Seneca Soil Survey (Tab 9). The major difference between the
three soils is the profile depth. The suitability ratings for individual soil
horizons are rated as good to fair (see Tab 9 for a more detailed description
of each quality).
VI. RECOMMENDED TOPSOIL SALVAGE DEPTHS
• Salvage depths for the 4-40's area soils will be identical to those
recommended by Fly and Associates for the surrounding Seneca Mine area
(see Tab 9, Alternate Table 6; Tab 9, Attachment I, Section II; and Topsoil
9-12
