Selection of Overburden Parameters. In 1974, an initial examination of Seneca II-W overburden
material was performed by Peabody Coal Company (Peabodyl. Because the analyses completed
• on these overburden cores did not meet the 1980 State and Federal requirements, additional
analyses were requested (Starr, personal communication, 19801. In July 1980, a final list of
parameters was decided upon by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division ICMLRDI,
Office of Surface Mining Reclamation end Enforcement (OSMREI, and Peabody. These
parameters are as follows:
- pH, paste
- Conductivity IECI mmhos/cm at 25°C
- Saturation Percentage ISPI
- Particle Size 1% sand, clay, silt, end very fine sand)
- Texture Class
- Water Soluble Calcium (Cal, Magnesium IMgI, and Sodium INaI
- Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SARI
- Copper ICuI
- Zinc IZnI
- Boron IBI
- Molybdenum IMoI
- Selenium ISeI if the pH is less than 6.0
- Aluminum IAII
-Cadmium (Cdl
- Iron IFe)
- Manganese IMnI
- Lead (Pb)
During 1981, CMLRD drafted guidelines for collection of overburden geochemistry data. As a
result of discussion between Peabody and CMLRD personnel, four additional overburden cores
were deemed necessary to satisfy regulations regarding overburden analyses. These four cores
were analyzed for parameters listed above, including additional parameters specified in the
CMLRD's Baseline Hydrology Data Gathering Guidelines (September 16, 19811. The additional
parameters are as follows:
- Sulfate ISO41
Nitrate-Nitrogen IN03-NI
- Fluoride IFI
•
9 Revised 9/98
