Residents of the
towns of Gold Hill, Summerville, and Salina have expressed a
concern that granting the proposed amendment would affect the
quality of their water supply. The purpose of this letter
report is to address those concerns.
A. Description of Project
Gold Hill Ventures is constructing a milling facility
approximately 1/2 mile east of the Town of Gold Hill. To
supply the necessary water requirements for the milling
operation, Gold Hill Ventures intends to pump water from Left
Hand Creek into storage in underground mine workings that
are located in the Time, Wynona, and Hazel A. Mines. Storage
of water is required because the water rights allow for diver-
sion only from April 1 through October 31 annually and the mill
will operate year-round. The tailings from the mill will be
impounded in a lined pond and surface runoff will be diverted
away from the pond by installing drainage ditches. The drain-
age area above the tailings pond is 1.27 acres. As part of the
project, the Cash and Who Do Mines will be dewatered. Maps
showing the location of mines, tailings pond, and mill site
have been submitted to your office by Gold Hill Ventures.
B. Description of Study Area
The mill site and tailings pond is at an elevation of
approximately 8,450 feet based on the U.S.G.S. 7.5 minute Gold
Hill quadrangle. The drainage in the area of the mill site is
to the east into the Gold Run Drainage which is part of the
Four Mile Creek Drainage. The towns of Summerville and Salina
are located within the Gold Run Drainage. Gold Hill is located
west of the mill site and drainage from the mill site area will
not occur in that direction.
