M83-141 <br />Dear Mr. O'Connor: <br /> <br />SEP 2 3 i9b:, <br />MiriED LAND <br />RECLAMATION DIVISION <br />This letter is in response to the concerns that you raised in your letter <br />of September 16, 1985, regarding our Application for an Amendment to <br />the Cash Mine Limited Impact Permit. <br />Tailin¢s Reclamation <br />1. In order to revegetate the tailings retention structure in a manner <br />that will establish a diverse, effective, and long-lasting vegetative <br />cover on the land surface affected by the impoundment of the mill <br />tailings, a rock capillary barrier will be placed between the tailings <br />and the topsoil medium. This rock barrier will be placed on the <br />three sloping sides oP the tailings embankment and the relatively <br />flat surface of the former tailings pond. The minimum depth oP this <br />rock capillary barrier will be two feet. It will be obtained from the <br />mine dump sorting and upgrading operations at the Cash end Who <br />Do mines, and the shaft sinking and underground exploration and <br />development work at the Who Do mine. The waste rock from these <br />operations will consist of unmineralized, unaltered granite and <br />schist with lesser amounts of aplite and pegmatite. About 60 per- <br />cent of this rock capillary material will be 3 inches or smaller in ~r <br />size, while 30 percent will be between 3 inches and 6 inches, and <br />only 10 percent will be very coarse material that will range up to <br />15 inches in size. This size range will help achieve an effective <br />capillary barrier that will inhibit the upward migration of contami- <br />nants [rom the underlying mill tailings. So that this waste rock will <br />be readily available for use in reclaiming the tailings impoundment <br />structure, it will be segregated end placed near the existing lower <br />access roads that serve the Cash and Who Do mines. A small <br />front-end loader and dump truck will be used to load and transport <br />this waste rock to the tailings retention area. Tn order to install a <br />minimum two foot rock capillary barrier between the mill tailings <br />and the topsoil medium, it will be necessary to haul approximately <br />11,500 tons o[ waste rock from the Cash and Who Do mines.
