• III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
-;~CEIVED
f~AR 2 6 1999
r ,.;son of Minerals & Geology
Division of Minerals And C,eology
1~1~ Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 8020,::
Dear sirs,
• ~ cow.t,I L~
6~r ~ N Oak:
La Junta, CO Blr?50
March 24, 1999
l~
bJe are writing in regards to tha regular construction materials
operation reclamation permit applied fior by the All Rite Paving
and Redi-Mi:: Company ~,~ith the Colorado Land Reclamation Board.
The proposed mine site is L::nourn as the North River Pit, and is
located at or near Sections 1 °< ~6, Tournships 2~ °< 24 S, Range
55W, 6th Prime Meridian.
Our concerns are how a gravel pit will affect the nearby
agricultural and residential area, as urell as the abundant
natural r=rildlife in the immediate vicinity of the mine.
The. proposed mine mill create a problem not only urith dust, but
the standing water created will greatly add to the e;:tensive
mosquito problem. The applicants propose to be able to pump the
water bac4:: directly into the nearby Ar4::ansas River. A unique
theory considering the water table in the area is urithin 24 to ~6
inches from the top of the ground. ~
The reputation of the applicants has been questioned as to their
lac4.: of responsibility in the past for cleaning up fuel spills,
and hour that could affect the local and migratory wildlife and
the quality of water in the area down river.
Colorado State Highuray 194 is the route their trucF::s will have to
use, as it is the only thoroughfare available from their proposed
location. This highuray is used by the agricultural people in the
area, school children urall::ing to and from buses, people riding
horses, and bicyclists. The highr=ray is already overcrourded,
especially urhen you inr=lode the tourists traveling to and from
Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site. It is a narrour turn lane
highuray, devoid of any shoulders, uri.th deep drainage ditches on
both sides.
We are not uraging a personal protest against construction
materials ~ni.nes. They provide a much needed product, hourever, the
lac4:: of thought that has gone into choosing this location, and
the inherent danger to the surrounding residence on the part of
the applicants needed to be brought to your attention.

S~f ~1 y ^-,r
G~e~A Store
Debbie Storey
~~
