The purpose of the investigation is to obtain soil property information
for a proposed location of a future substation, and a proposed realignment of the existing
Sylvester Gulch road.
All drilling and sampling will be conducted on MCC property and will be drilled adjacent
to or within 100 feet of the existing Sylvester Gulch road or secondary jeep roads within
Sylvester Gulch. No temporary access roads will be required. Track mounted drilling
equipment will be used, so disturbance will be minimal. Drilling will be performed using
hollow stem augers, removed periodically to allow spilt spoon sampling at desired
depths.
No topsoil or subsoil will be stripped as the track mounted drilling equipment is
considered light traffic and will not destroy existing vegetation or cause erosion. In
addition, stripping soil will result in needless damage to soil characteristics given the
little amount of disturbance proposed. If needed, disturbed areas will be hand graded,
seeded, and mulched. All drill holes will be filled in after sampling.
MCC is also considering use of a soil penetrometer, which is a much less intrusive
method of conducting soil sampling. No hole is created using a soil penetrometer. This
method of soils investigation may be used initially, prior to drilling soil borings. The
data obtained would give MCC enough information to determine if all 42 borings are
needed.
E.Yhibit 69
June 1996
esh69mr169.doc
~~il
