Revision
February 1982
. One species of butterfly, the Nokomis Fritillar Butterfly (Speyeria
nokomis) was proposed for study in April 1975 as a possible federally
listed threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. No action has
been taken since that date. Colonies of this butterfly are located in
Unaweep Canyon and along the Dolores River in Paradox Valley.
Aquatic Biology and Fisheries
Included in Appendix XVIII are results from site specific aquatic stu-
dies conducted in November 1980 at the Hawk's Nest site by Beak Consultants
Incorporated.
The North Fork of the Gunnison River begins at the confluence of
Anthracite and Muddy Creeks, approximately four miles upstream from the
• proposed lease area. Muddy Creek is a poor fishery characterized by high
turbidity and supporting mainly a sucker population. Anthracite Creek is a
high quality fishery with a population of about 60 percent rainbow, 12 per-
cent brown, 21 percent brook, and 7 percent cutthroat trout. The cutthroat
trout occurring in the area is an introduced subspecies and is, therefore
not the threatened Colorado River cutthroat strain (Salmo clarki-pleuriticus)
(personal communication with the Colorado Division of Wildlife threatened
and Endangered Fish expert in Denver, Colorado). Anthracite Creek is
stocked by DOW with catchable rainbow trout, and a portion of the stream is
designated for fly-fishing only.
Fish species in the North Fork vary with the location in the stream.
From Paonia Reservoir downstream 5 miles to Somerset, the DOW stocks in

2.04-64A~
