2.04.11 Fish and Wildlife Resources Information <br />• A review of fish and wildlife resources on the permit area was <br />conducted by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) Area Manager (Dave <br />Kenvin) and Area Wildlife Biologist (Rick Sherman) during 1978 and 1979. <br />Copies of these wildlife assessments with general recommendations for miti- <br />gation are included in Appendix XVIII.2. A summary of the Latilong Distri- <br />bution Studies for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians (1978) are also <br />included in Appendix XVIII for the Montrose region which includes the <br />Hawk's Nest Mine. <br />Western Slope Carbon, Inc. has also contacted the U.S. Fish and <br />Wildlife Service, Office of Endangered Species, concerning the need for a <br />Section 7 consultation for endangered and high-interest raptors which use <br />• or potentially could use the area (e.g., bald eagle, golden eagle, pere- <br />grine falcon, prairie falcon). The USFWS response is included in Appendix <br />XVIII. <br />A general description of wildlife in the region adapted from the Final <br />Environmental Statement of 4Jest-Central Colorado Coal (Bureau of Land <br />Management 1979) is given below. <br />General Regional Wildlife Information <br />The general area of interest lies within the Colorado Plateau and the <br />southern Rocky Mountain physiographic regions (Kuchler 1964). Most of the <br />approximately 9 million acres of land in the West-Central Colorado region <br />are available for some form of wildlife use, even on agriculture and <br />ranching lands.
