2.04.7•'1-lydrology Description
.•.~
Detailed hydrologic information includi
Revision
February 1982
a description of the water
sampling program, summary of 1975-1980 results and 1981 results, are con-
tained in Appendices XII - XIV and Exhibits 2.04.5-A and 2.04.5-B.
Groundwater
The alluvium of the North Fork of the Gunnison River is the major aquifer
on the site. The alluvial,~extent is narrowly confined by the steep V-shaped
valley walls. One drill hole for the silo-.foundation study showed 48 feet '.
of alluvium. Depths are probably. as great as 70 feet in the middle of the
valley.
Quartz monzonite.is the predominant rock type in the alluvium with
i other igneous rocks such, as basalt also present-. Sandstone is•the only
sedimentary rock which is present due to the high energy level of the river
though its occurrence is rare. The particle size ranges from .sand size to
large cobbles.
Water level s. in the alluvial aquifer were within 10 feet of the ground
surface for all the holes drilled so far. Wells can be expected to yield
upwards of 500 gpm due to the high primary;transmissivity of_the'alluvial
gravels (Price and Arnow .1974, U.S..Department of Interior 1978). Recharge
is from the river itself during snowmelt season. Due to this high trans-
missivity, water quality in the alluvial aquifer is very similar to river
-;yti
~.
...~.:.
' .- ..,:
water. Known uses of water from this alluvial aquifer are presented in
Appendix XXIV-5, Table III'A.l; and Figure III A.1.
- The Crystal Meadows fill area .-has. been reclaimed and three wells are
being monitored for alluvial aquifer water quality. Well (CM3) is located
above the fill, well CM2 is completed in the fill and well CM3 is below the
~..`..... 2.04=21'
