Soil mapping unit descriptions are presented in
Appendix XVI.2. Descriptions of soil series (mapping unit components) are
presented in the text of two reports prepared by Dean Loukonen of the Soil
Conservation Service (August 1978 and March 1979) presented in Appendices
XVI.3 and XVI.4 of this permit application.
Topsoil Availability
The Hawk's Nest P1ines are active underground mines; therefore, soils
have previously been disturbed. Only a small quantity of soil was salvaged
and stored. Except for the small soil stockpile near the West Portal area
loadout facilities, there is no available source of topsoil material within
the permit boundary in sufficient quantities to cover the previously
disturbed surfaces (Table 2.04.9.A). Therefore, WSC has contracted with
the Bureau of Reclamation to obtain topsoil material from alluvial sedi-
ments of Paonia Reservoir (Appendix X.6). These alluvial materials are
available in quantities sufficient to meet the volumes of topsoil required
to cover the approximate 30 acres of total disturbance.

2.04-38"
