2.04.8 Climatological Information
• The Hawk's Nest Mine site is located about 11 miles east-northeast of
Paonia in the North Fork Valley. The valley is narrow with steep sides and
is oriented generally east-west. Elevation at the mine site is 6,176 feet.
Meteorological data collected at the nearby Paonia and ARCO's Mt.
Gunnison stations are used to obtain climatological information for the
Hawk's Nest site and are considered representative of the permit area
(Tables 2.04.8.A, B, and C).
Wind studies at Atlantic Richfield's Mt. Gunnison Project site deter
mined that average wind speed during a 6-month period was about 8 miles per
hour. Prevailing winds aloft are from the West; however, the surface pat-
tern generally orients along the North Fork Gunnison Canyon. At the Hawk's
• Nest site, the canyon winds generally blow up-canyon in the afternoon, and
down-canyon in the morning. Temperatures recorded at the Paonia Station
average 48.5oF annually, and precipitation averages 14.69 inches annually.
The growing season near Paonia is approximately 138 days each year (based
on 32 degrees Farenheit freeze threshold data). Additional climatological
information is included in Appendix XV.
2.04.9 Soils Resource Information
Soils occurring within the permit area consit of six soil mapping
units:
13 Beenom-Absarokee Association, 20 to 60 percent slopes
17 Breece loam, 1 to 6 percent slopes
• 41 Fughes-Curecanti stony looms, 10 to 40 percent slopes
2.04-34
