u
Mining Plan
This mine has previously been worked to the eas
area outlined on the map which started in 1961. The
mined is in the northeast part of the affected area.
in drips running north-south and as each north-south
a hew strip is then started to the immediate west of
mined strip.
Geology
t of the affected
area now being
Mining is directed
strip is completed,
the previously
The clay at this mine is in horizontal layers. Thickness of the
clay averages 24 feet and is covered by 6 to 18 feet of coarse conglomerate.
Mining Plan
The clay is mined by working small pits about 125 feet wid= by
250 feet long. The rocky overburden is removed with a dozer and is
pushed ou.t on three sides of the pit. Then the clay is pushed out
of the pit into a stockpile on the remaining side which is usually
to the north. No further work is done until the stockpile has been
depleted by trucks hauling the clay to the plant. It usually takes
about nine months to deplete a stockpile. At this point in mining,
the pit is 25 to 30 feet deep.
The next pit to be worked is adjacent to or behind the previously
worked pit. The old pit is then filled with the overburden covering
the new pit. Working in a grid pattern, each pit is filled wits
rocky overburden, leaving a five to 8 foot depression.
CJ
