Box 312 & Geo/o9Y
Cortez, CO 81321
Dear Mrs. Bell:
We are in receipt of your letter of July 19, 1998 regarding the
activities at the Stone Gravel Pit. According to our
understanding of *_he the approved permit with the Colorado State
Mined Land Reclamation Board, Mr. Stone is proceeding with
delineating the working areas of the pit and limiting vehicle
access to it. BLM road number 4520 is the designated public
vehicular access for this area and remains open for access to
public land. The road to the south (which is now gated) provides
alternate access to adjacent land owners, who are still free to
use this route when necessary. The gate and fence provides some
level of public safety and equipment security for the gravel
mining operations. Be assured that the gate in no way limits
our, or Montezuma County's, fire attack capabilities. We expect
that Mr. Stone will use material from the gravel pit to build up
his access road to County Road 21.
While we appreciate your contact regarding this information, we
were aware of activities at the gravel pit, since Mr. Stone
notified BLM of starting operations and BLM has visited the site.
We understand you have a copy of the approved MLRB Reclamation
Permit, and encourage you to read it closely. If you continue .c
monitor operations, we recommend you maintain a safe a distance.
Please feel free to contact the state DMG or us if you feel
violations of the permit are occurring.
Sincerely,
Ke" nt off
Associate Area Manager
cc: D en Stone
ally Erickson, DMG
RECEIVED
JYL 2 ! ~
DIV.
