Aquatic Life Water Suitability. The evaluation of Seneca II-W spring waters for aquatic <br />life suitability is based to a large extent on the condition of hardness. In short, the <br />higher the value of hardness, the higher the value of the water quality standard for <br />aquatic life and vice-versa for lower values of hardness (see Appendix 7-5 ). Appendix 7-5 <br />is a copy of physical, biological, and inorganic material damage standards established by <br />the CMLRD for aquatic life, and St defines many of the trace element standards like Cd, <br />Cu, Pb, Ni, Ag, and Zn on the basis of hardness. <br />Table 7-25 displays the name, number of sites with exceedences, and the frequency of <br />exceedences for aquatic life standards. Three sites have exceedences for the Al standard. <br />Four sites have exceedences for the Fe standard. Standards for Mn and Zn were exceeded at <br />one site each. Exceedences for Hg, Ag, and H25 are considered suspect because of the <br />asterisk designation, Ten sites show exceedences for NH3 standards. Three sites exceeded <br />the 2000 mg/1 TDS standard, and one site exceeded the 15,000 mg/1 TDS standard. Based on <br />the number of sites that exceed water quality standards for seven parameters (A1, Fe, Mn, <br />NH3, Ag, TDS, and Zn), Seneca II-W spring waters are marginally suitable for certain types <br />of aquatic life. <br />• <br />Irrigation Water Suitability. Table 7-26 shows the comparison of Seneca II-W spring sites <br />and irrigation water quality standards. The standards for B, F, pH, 504, and the 5,000 <br />mg/1 TDS level were exceeded at one site each. Exceedences for Hg are considered suspect <br />because of the asterik designation. Evaluation of the spring water quality for the sodium <br />and salinity hazard was performed using Figure 7-10. Figure 7-10 is a plot of the average <br />conductivity (EC, umhos/cm) and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) values for spring sites <br />(U.S. Salinity Laboratory, 1954). The spring water quality has a high salinity hazard and <br />a low sodium hazard. Site 525 has an extremely high salinity hazard and is unsuitable for <br />irrigation purposes. Based on the information presented in Table 7-26 and Figure 7-10, <br />spring water at the Seneca II-W complex is marginally suitable for irrigation of tolerant <br />and semi-tolerant crops. <br />Livestock Water Suitability. The comparison of Seneca II-W spring water chemistry to <br />standards for livestock water quality is shown in Table 7-27. Exceedences for the Cd <br />standard is shown for two spring sites. The conductivity standard was exceeded at ten <br />sites. Fluoride and Mn standards were exceeded at two sites. Iron dissolved, Fe total, <br />• and Zn standards were exceeded at one site each.
