_ ,~. .

t
EVANSTON SHALLOIJ VARIANT
The Evanston Shallow Variant consists of moderately deep well
drained soils formed in residuum and from alluvium and colluvium derived
from sandstone. They occur on rolling upland benches and sideslopes
and have slopes of 0 to 29 percent.
They are similar to and occur near Savage soils. They are also
similar to Grail Taxadjunct soils. Savage soils are deeper than 40
inches and Grail Taxadjunct soils have mollic epipedons greater than
16 inches deep. Both have fine control section textures. Evanston
shallow Varian[ soils also occur near Castner and the Coberly Variant
soils.
. Evanston shallow 9ariant soils are classified as fine-loamy, mixed
Aridic Argiborolls.
This soil is a variant because it is shallower than the acceptable
range in depth for the Evanston Series.
Typical pedon of Evanston shallow Variant sandy clay loam, 12
percent slope is located within 408,000:], 1,422,000E and 411,000N,
1,426,000E.
Al--0 to 2 inches; brown (lOYR S/3) sandy clay loam, dark brown
(lOYR 3/3) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, friable, slightly
sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and few medium roots; many
fine interstitial pores; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline;
clear smooth boundary.

2-205
