CASTNER SERIES
The Castner series consists of shallow somewhat excessively drained
soils Formed from sandstone. They are located on gently rounded ridges
and bedrock-controlled benches and have slopes of 0 to 49 percent.
Castner soils are similar to Shambo shallow Variant soils except
that Castner soils are skeletal, less than 20 inches deep and have
a lithic contact. They are mapped near Savage, Evanston Variant and
Skylick soils.
Soils of the Castner series are loamy-skeletal, mixed Lithic
Haploborolls.
Typical pedon of Castner gravelly loam, 4 percent slope is located
. within 405,000N, 1,414,000E and 408,000N, 1,418,000E.
A--O to 3 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (lOYR
3i3) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable,
nonsticky; nonplastic; gravel content is 25 percent; mildly alkaline;
clear wavy boundary.
C--3 to 9 inches; dark brown (lOYR 4/3) extremely gravelly loam,
dark brown (lOYR 3/3) moist; massive structure; soft, very friable,
slightly sticky, nonplastic; gravel content is 70 percent; moderately
alkaline; abrupt wavy boundary.
R--9 inches; sandstone.
Depth to lithic contact ranges from 8 to 20 inches.
