• Average height of the woody species found in the sample plots <br />are shown in Table 9 along with percent basal ground cover of litter, <br />duff and cushion plants. Also presented is the aspect and percent <br />r <br />slope of each of the two reference areas within each vegetation type. <br />The actual data for each sample plot in each reference area <br />is presented in Tables 10, 11 and 12 for aspen, mountain brush, and <br />sagebrush respectively. This data included the parameters of <br />percent cover and biomass of herbaceous species and density of woody <br />plants. Percent cover and biomass were measured from material in <br />meter square plots. The cover was determined from cells 2.5 by 2.5 cros <br />covered by foliage of herbaceous species. The biomass was measured <br />in grams of dry matter per meter square plot. Density was the number <br />• of woody plants per plot, 10 meters by 10 meters or 100 square meters <br />per plot. Along with these parameters are shown the percent reliability <br />that can be measured as change from the respective parameter means. <br />Only one parameter exceeded 109. of a 20 percent probability level <br />but when whole numbers are rounded off it was considered to be only <br />10 percent (aspen, cluster number 22). <br />The actual calculation of variances followed the standard <br />procedure using the formula: <br />s2 ~ ER2 - (EX~/n <br />n-1 <br />and the percent change from the reference mean, (xl x 2 ) 100, that <br />can be detected with a probability of 20 percent was determined by the <br />following calculation: <br />• 100 < xl x2 ) <br />_ t20 2s /n (100) <br />xl _ <br />xl <br />where s2 is the variance for the original sample mean, xl. <br />8-81 rr_s-1s <br />
