Gravel Pit Reclamation Plan
For Cucharas Pit
December 16, 2002
This reclamation plan covers the area requested and should not be used as a substitute for other areas
needing reclaimed. The area requested is as follows: SE4 Section 35, Township 26 South, Range 65 West,
Huerfano County, Colorado (see attached map).
The predominant soil for [he area to be reclaimed is Schamber-Midway Complex (map unit 77}, 3-2J%
slopes. This soil has a Ecological Site description of Shaly Plains and is within MLRA (Major Land
Resource Area) 69.
Topsoil Removal: Removal of the top foot of soil will be necessary to ensure adequate availability for
reclamation activities. Stockpile the topsoil in a location that will minimize exposure to wind and water
erosion.
Reshaping: Land slopes should not exceed 50 percent (2:1) and should be flatter where feasible and
practical. Land slopes exceeding the 50 percent threshold will be difficult to reclaim and stmctural
practices may become necessary to ensure a stable grade suitable for seeding establishment.
Topsoil Replacement: Topsoil will be replaced uniformly at a depth approaching pre-disturbance depth.
This will be necessary to provide adequate soil to ensure good root development for the revegetation
process, If insufficient quantities of topsoil are available for the topsoiling activities it may become
necessary to bring soil from offsite to ensure the necessary quantities. The soil being spread should be free
of excess debris to facilitate planting operations.
Fertilizer Requirements: Timing of application will be immediately prior to seeding, at the time of seeding,
or irrunediately following seeding. This will be dependent upon the type fertilizer and equipment used.
The rate of fertilizer application will be no less than 40 pounds of available nitrogen (N) and 40 pounds of
available phosphate (P205) per acre. This requirement can be waived if a soil test shows adequate fertility
[o support the vegetation re-establishment.
Seeding: The area will be broadcast seeded to a mixture of site appropriate grasses. Seed will be
incorporated into the surface soil to a depth not to exceed'/< inch, by raking, harrowing or other proven
method. Seed will be applied between November 1st and April 30th. Seed will be applied on a pure live
seed per acre basis, as follows:
Western Wheatgrass (Arriba) - 16#/acre
Blue Grama- LZ#/acre
Little Bluestem- 2.1#/acre
Sideoats Grama - 1.8#/acre
Winterfat (Shrub) - .OS#/acre
Mulching: The disturbed azea shall be mulched using grass hay or cereal grain straw. At least 50% of the
mulch by weight will be 10 inches or more in length. The straw will be applied at a rate of 4,000 lbs./ ac
minimum
Completed by: Casey Sheley, District Conservationist
