It usually is grown <br />for 1 year or less, except where [here <br />is permanent cover as in orchards. <br />Purpose <br />Technical Guide <br />Section IV <br />All Field Offices <br />May 1983 <br />3. Seedbed Preparation (Irrigated) <br />a. Plant directly into crop <br />residue if no weed problem <br />exists. <br />b. Prepare a regular seedbed <br />to reduce competition if <br />persistant weedy plants <br />exist or use on appropriate <br />pre-emergence chemical. <br />To control erosion during periods when <br />[he major crops do no[ furnish <br />adequate cover; add organic material <br />[o the soil; and improve infiltration, <br />aeration, and [11th. <br />Where applicable <br />On cropland; certain recreation and <br />wildlife areas; and orchard, vineyard, <br />and small fruit areas. <br />Specifications <br />1. Any adapted close-growing crop or <br />mixture of crops can be used. <br />2. The crop will not be burned. If <br />harvested of grazed, sufficient <br />residue will be left on the soil <br />surface to give protection from <br />wind and water erosion and to <br />obtain a positive (+) Soil Condi- <br />tioning Indices rating for the <br />crop rotation when returned to the <br />soil. (See Agronomy Technical <br />Notes S0, 52, end 53. <br />• <br />4. Seedbed Preparation (Non-Irrigated) <br />a. Seed directly into existing <br />crop residue or growth of <br />annual weeds if present. <br />b. Apply appropriate burn down <br />or pre-emergent chemicals <br />only when it is desirable <br />to reduce competition from <br />perennial or persistant <br />weedy plants. <br />5. Field Office specifications <br />will also list: <br />a. Adapted cover and green <br />manure crops and <br />varieties. <br />b.
