~`Y
71BBTRACT
As part of the relicensinq application for the Golden Eagle Mine,
and to facilitate their long-range planning process, Wyoming Fuel
Company has employed Powers Elevation Co., Inc. to complete a
cultural resources overview of the mine's permit revision area.
The project area encompasses approximately 5,410 acres and is
located about one mile west of the town of Weston, in Las Animas
County, Colorado. The project goals were to determine how many
r prehistoric and historic cultural resources localities might be
I~ present in the project area, what types of site may exist, and
where these localities may be found. An inspection of the
r secondary literature, General Land Office records, and
Il topographic quadrangle maps discovered that between 75 and 100
historic sites are probably present in the project area. Nearly
all of these sites will be found along the Purgatoire River and
up the several tributary canyons. Site types represented include
the Colorado and Wyoming railroad, an aqueduct, the Pacheco
Cemetery, the community of Zamora, numerous dwellings and
+ outbuildings, and several windmills. Two previous archaeological
surveys were used to predict the number and locations of
prehistoric zesources. It was estimated that about 160
prehistoric sites will be found in the project area, the majority
of these occurring in the pinyon-juniper and oakbrush ecological
zone. Zones of high, medium, and low site densities were defined
on the basis of previous survey results and were depicted on a
composite map of the project area.
L
C
L
