?~: 43
(foundations and trash) of such settlements. Most, if not all,
of these settlements will be scattered along the sides of the
Picketwire Valley and up the tributary valleys. Other possible
~~ site types include windmills, irrigation ditches, mining
prospects, and at least one cemetery.
The results of a sample-oriented survey of over 10,000 acres by
Lutz and Hunt (1979) and intensive inventory of 920 acres. by
Tucker (1983) in the vicinity of the project area were used to
predict the number and locations of prehistoric resources. It
~' was estimated that approximately 160 prehistoric sties will be
found in the project area. Two-thirds of these sites will be
located in the pinyon-juniper and oak brush ecological zones,
~, slightly fewer than one-third of the sites will occur in the
loamy foothills zone next to the drainages, and a few sites will
be found in the few acres of ponderosa pine in the extreme
northwestern corner of the project area.
Three zones of prehistoric site density have been delineated
~ based upon previous results. Areas of low site density will
~ occur on steep slopes (>30 degrees) and within the floodplains
of the local drainages. Areas of moderate site density will be
found on relatively level, high mesatops at some distance (up to
>_ 3 km) from drainages on west-facing slopes. And, high site
~' density areas will be located on east-facing, flat to moderate
i slopes (0-30 degrees), between the lower margins of the steep
:'~ slopes of the high mesas and points approximately 100 m away from
a drainage.
:S
•.I
~4
t'
.,~~
,.~
These estimates of site numbers, types, and densities are based
upon existing data and are as good or as accurate as that
original data. They are reasonable, however, and we would not
expect the actual numbers to differ greatly from these estimates.
~. Verification of these predictions can only be made by an
E_ intensive inventory of the permit revision area.
CITED
Bair, Gerald A.
1977 A Preliminary ~poraisal o~ Cultural Resources ~ ie
Bureau of Land Management's R on Basin Coal Lease Resource
Area.
