It
is. more likely, however, that between 75 and 100 sites will be
recorded.
PREHISTORIC RESOURCES
Unlike the historic resources, we have no records or maps that
show us where the prehistoric sites are located. We are
fortunate, however, to have available two archaeological studies
of nearby areas (Lutz and Hunt 1979; Tucker 1983), from which
data can be extracted that will allow us to predict how many
prehistoric sites will be found in the project area and where
they most likely will be found.
Estimated Number of Prehistoric Sites
The Office of Public and Contract Archaeology, University of
Northern Colorado conducted in 1977-79 an intensive, sample-
oriented survey of approximately 10,080 acres in the highlands
region between the Purgatoire and the Apishapa Rivers in
southeastern Colorado (Lutz and Hunt 1979). The areas of survey
consisted of square or rectangular quadrants, each 160 acres in
size, distributed proportionately within three ecological zones:
Ponderosa Pine-Douglas Fir, Ponderosa Pine, and Pinyon-Juniper,
Oak Brush. The survey recorded 212 prehistoric sites, which were
distributed unevenly in the three zones. Table 5 summarizes the
parameters and results of this previous survey.
Table 5.
