BOX 6817
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO 80934
January 13, 1978
State Department of Natural Resources
Mined Land Reclamation Board
U. S. Custom House
14 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado
Dear Board Members:
III III'llillllll III
We are writing this letter to you as a protest against further
mining operations by the Castle Concrete Company Sn the areas
known as Snyder, Queens Canyon and Pikeview mining operations
near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Our objections and pleas are based on the premise that the
Castle Concrete Company has not restored tiie shed area and
that further mining under the present program of restoration
as being exercised by Castle Concrete falls far short of the
acceptability. Further, the mining operations are inflicting
economic damage upon the industry of tourism, an industry we
represent and are deeply involved in.
Our philosophy certainly does not state that we are opposed to
the existence of another industry nor are we opposed to the rights
of one company to prosper. It does state, however, that we are
opposed to a business entity infringing on anotrLer, and we
believe, that Castle Concrete Co, is infrining in its expanding
operations and in the obvious and apparent failure to restore
the "scars". The scars are causing this area to become un-
attractive and uninviting to visitors and could ultimately
seriously infringe upon the Tourist Industry of the Pikes Peak
region.
For the past few years, we have been hearing comments by visitors
who are totally dismayed by the ugliness of the "scars" created
by Castle Concrete. These comments are totally negative.
They are reaching the ears of other potential visitors. The
remarks ask that we, in the industry of tourism, do something
to prevent further desecration of the appearance of the Pikes
Peak region, the appearance that is so plainly visible by all
as they approach and are in the Pikes Peak region.
It is our understanding also that the Snyder operation poses
great potential danger to the City of Manitou Springs, CO
and that this danger is created by the removal of natural
growth on the surface of the project as well as in the depth
of mining operations. ~~~
^~.
