• -2- •
I have many additional concerns, as well. I anticipate that there will
be greatly increased noise (first from road-building then later from
the blasting and limestone removal by heavy machinery) in my neighborhood,
in addition to increased dust and dirt from blasting and the haul trucks.
I am concerned that my house and out-buildings cannot help but be damaged
by the weekly blastings of such magnitude and at such a close distance.
I fear that when the quarrying starts, the birds and animals who live
there will move to the "fringe areas" of Dowe Flats, and that my property
will comprise part of the southern fringe...I do not want my home to
become a refuge for plague-ridden prairie dogs, garden-razing deer and
huge birds of prey, nor do I want these animals to meet their doom on
Highway 66. Lastly, I anticipate there will be effects from the proposed
mine that neither myself nor plant officials can predict, as the short
and long-term consequences of messing with such a huge chunk df the
environment simply cannot be absolutely controlled by humans.
Before closing, I would like to interject two personal preferences if
Southwestern does obtain permits. First, I approve strongly of the
plant's first choice bf haul routes to be a new road built to the west
of 53rd St. through the Brown farm. Second, I advocate for their building
the haul road first, then using this access (not 53rd St.) to build the
rerouted county road. I believe these two plans will to some extent
minimize the negative impact on local traffic patterns.
In closing, while I concede that Boulder and other counties with their
current pro-development priorities (but that's another letter) need cement--
and that the Southwestern plant needs raw material from which to make i:t--
I cannot sit silently by while the limestone source in my backyard is
blasted out on a grand scale for the next thirty years. I can only hope
that my opinions will not fall upon deaf ears; I speak as one resident
who does not want her life intimately entwined with a cement plant and
its quarries for the rest of her days in Boulder county.
Sincerely.
`Lus..,-
Ellen Rosenberg
13018 N. 53rd St.
Longmont, CO. 80503
