• FRESHWATER POND N0. 3
Freshwater Pond No. 3 is a partially incised pond designed to contain
approximately 3,000,000 gallons of water. The pond receives both that
water pumped from the Southfield mine workings and water for consumptive
use pumped from the Corley Mine Well. The water is stored in the pond
until it can be used in the mining and processing operations. Excess
dewatering flows are discharged into the Magpie Creek Diversion at NPDES
discharge point 003. Pond No. 3 is also lined with a synthetic hypalon
liner which extends beyond the pond's edges. The pond will not remain
after final reclamation.
Pond No. 3 functions as part of the water-use circuit which provides water
for the mining and coal preparation activities. Water is pumped from both
the Southfield Mine dewatering well and the Corley Mine Well in the
northeast portion of the permit area. The pumped water is routed via
pipeline to Pond No. 3. The water is discharged as required from Pond No.
3 to Water Treatment and Recycle Pond No. 2 as makeup water for the coal
preparation plant. Any excess water stored in Pond No. 3 is sampled to
ensure that it will meet effluent standards before being discharged at
NPDES point 003.
The elevation of the design water level in Pond 3 provides for containment
of runoff from a 100-year, 24-hour event (0.70 ac-ft) with no discharge
while maintaining a minimum freeboard of one foot. The water level in
Pond 2 will be maintained at or below the design water level. All
hydrology inputs are shown on the Table 6a, SEDCAD+ Version 3.0, Pond 3.
Refer to Table 6, Freshwater Pond No. 3 - Design Summary, for design
results. Freshwater Pond No. 3's location is shown on the Drainage and
Sediment Control Map, (Map 20). Its design drawings, storage capacity
table and stage/storage curve are shown on the Water Treatment and Recycle
Pond No. 2 and Freshwater Pond No. 3 Designs Map, (Map 22). Since Pond
No. 3 is only utilized in the water-use circuit and is not designed to
contain sediment or surface runoff, no design calculations are provided.
•
22 R Revised - March 1992
