2. PIT PUMPING AND WATER DISCHARGE
Since the mine will encounter water in the mining operation below 4-25 fee[ of excavation, pit
pumping is needed. An electric powered pump will be placed at the low point of the pi[ in Area 1
from which PVC pipe will deliver the water to the sediment pond. Pumping is expected to be from
1000 to 2000 gallons per minute during the initial stages and after one month, the rate should drop to
less than 700 gallons per minute. Gravel filter berms will be used in [he pit itself to reduce
sedimentation and the 1 acre sediment pond will further reduce sediment for discharge. The pond
will have a manually operated gate valve structure for controlling the discharge.
United has applied for a combined stormwater and process water discharge permit specifically for
sand and gravel mining of this site. The pond discharge enters the Colorado River a short distance
downstream and west of the permit area.
All discharges from pumping water will be regulated under a combined storm water/process water
permit that has been applied for with the Colorado Department of Health. If the water quality is out
of compliance, water will not be discharged until it is in compliance.
3. WATER CONSUMPTION FOR THE OPERATION AND WATER RIGHTS
Since the mine will encounter water in the mining operation below 5-24 feet of excavation, and
permanent lakes will be left as part of the reclamation plan, it is demonstrated in this section that
there are sufficient water rights for this operation and the reclaimed lake after mining is completed.
A well permit has been applied for with the Division of Water Resources. Since the Colorado River
has unused water in this area, an augmentation plan is not needed. The well permit will cover pit
pumping as well as all consumptive uses for the operation. During the mining stage of the project,
consumptive uses will be limited to [he evaporation from the sediment pond, road watering, plant
water sprays, and gravel retention. After mining, the consumptive use will be lake evaporation. All
consumptive uses are shown below:
15 Road Pit 10/02 33
