2. PIT PUMPING AND WATER DISCHARGE <br />Since the mine will encounter water in the mining operation below 4-25 fee[ of excavation, pit <br />pumping is needed. An electric powered pump will be placed at the low point of the pi[ in Area 1 <br />from which PVC pipe will deliver the water to the sediment pond. Pumping is expected to be from <br />1000 to 2000 gallons per minute during the initial stages and after one month, the rate should drop to <br />less than 700 gallons per minute. Gravel filter berms will be used in [he pit itself to reduce <br />sedimentation and the 1 acre sediment pond will further reduce sediment for discharge. The pond <br />will have a manually operated gate valve structure for controlling the discharge. <br />United has applied for a combined stormwater and process water discharge permit specifically for <br />sand and gravel mining of this site. The pond discharge enters the Colorado River a short distance <br />downstream and west of the permit area. <br />All discharges from pumping water will be regulated under a combined storm water/process water <br />permit that has been applied for with the Colorado Department of Health. If the water quality is out <br />of compliance, water will not be discharged until it is in compliance. <br />3. WATER CONSUMPTION FOR THE OPERATION AND WATER RIGHTS <br />Since the mine will encounter water in the mining operation below 5-24 feet of excavation, and <br />permanent lakes will be left as part of the reclamation plan, it is demonstrated in this section that <br />there are sufficient water rights for this operation and the reclaimed lake after mining is completed. <br />A well permit has been applied for with the Division of Water Resources. Since the Colorado River <br />has unused water in this area, an augmentation plan is not needed. The well permit will cover pit <br />pumping as well as all consumptive uses for the operation. During the mining stage of the project, <br />consumptive uses will be limited to [he evaporation from the sediment pond, road watering, plant <br />water sprays, and gravel retention.
