INTRDDNCTIDN
INTRODUCTIC]N AND OVF32VIEW: The following application describes the operation
• and reclamation of a new gravel pit to be located several miles southeast of
Pueblo, Colorado in Pueblo County. This site is owned and controlled by the
State of Colorado and is managed by the State Board of Land Commissioners. A
tiny portion of this site was operated in the past by other parties and was
left in a highly disturbed condition. That previous operation Cabout 5 to 7
acres in extent) appears to have been operated over a considerable period of
time and portions of it probably predate the reclamatim law. This permit
includes the disturbed area of this previous operation.
The life of this operation is estimated to be about 30 years, but the
actual life will be totally dependent upon demand for the product. The pit
will be operated by Broderick and Gibbons, a major asphalt production and
paving company in Colorado with permits for many other operations throughout
Colorado. The company has one other pit in the Pueblo area, That pit is
nearly depleted and therefore the need for this new site.
The site is Located far from any major housing developments and is in an
area where the land is used mainly for grazing. By the time this operation is
well along, growth of Pueblo may be approaching this site thus making it ideal
. for supplying the needs of future construction east of the city. It is
possible the Land could be developed after the mining is completed, but for
now the proposed final land use is a return to grazing.
The land itself is relatively flat showing only minor relief features.
No trees, streams, lakes, or ponds occur in the area to be mined. Visibility
of the site is minimal and is at least two miles from any extensively traveled
highways. The vegetatim is mainly grass with minor amounts of native sub
shrubs (mainly Winterfat). Wildlife resources are minimal on the site. Soils
are generally very coarse, gravelly, and poor in quality and quantity.
Fbwever, what soil is present is sufficient to implement good revegetation. A
quasi subirrigation approach can be used in the revegetatirn as the gravel is
underlain by shale.
This application follows the format presented in the application form
287,3E (Rev. 07/88) which is included in the application. A table of contents
to the various exhibits is included. Each page has a number in the lower
right corner and the name of the exhibit in the upper right corner. Thus
• finding a particular portion is made easier to facilitate the review of
various exhibits.
Page i
