I~

RECLAMATION PLAN
here takes into account these possible perturbations in the weather patterns
and presents corrective actions that could be implemented if bad conditions
occur.
The revegetatian program is designed around a seed mixture that contains
large numbers of native species as well as sane introduced species that have
been successful in this area. The seed mixture can either be broadcast or
drilled, as circumstances dictate. All of the species are readily available,
except in those rare years when a crop failure occurs. In those cases, the
seed supplier can usually provide a substitute species that is similar in
character to the one desired.
In large measure, the key to revegetation success is diversity in the
mixture. In most instances a range of cmditions are possible on a particular
site. The seed mixture should focus an the selection of species with
extensively overlapping tolerance curves, the sum total of which span the
possible variations of soil properties and moisture conditions. Native
species should be emphasized, but because they are slow to develop introduced
species that exhibit only moderate competitiveness should also be included.
Seeding rates should be designed for the average conditions and let natural
processes select desirable species rn local sites with above or below average
conditions. Seeding rates also need to be adjusted to the soil texture. The
following seed mixtures have been designed around all of these factors. Two
mixtures are presented. One is for drill seeding and me for broadcast
seeding. Minor shifts in the amounts of certain species account for the
differences.
MIXTURE FOR BROADCASTING
- ----- ---- ----- ----
SPECIES
--------------------
lb PLS/acre seeds/ib
seeds/sgft
BLUE GRAMA
CRSTD WHEAT., EPHRAIM
INTERMEDIATE WHEAT.
PUBESCENT WHEAT.
WESTERN WHEATGRASS
SIDEOATS GRAMA
YELLOW SWEETCLOVER
------------------------
1 711000
4 200000
5 97000
5 90000
5 126000
3 143000
.25
-
--
- 260000
---------
----
---
23.25 1627000
16.32
18.37
11.13
10.33
14.46
9.85
1.49
81.96
Page 19
