The soil, to a depth d 12+ <br />• inches, has a matrix color ranging from tOYR 3/3 to 4/2 with no mottling or gleying in evidence. No <br />hydrologic indicators assodated with this tertace were observed. <br />Ten individual wetlands, 6 on or near the west bank and four on the east, were delineated along Elk <br />Creek. Sample points OX-1 and OX-3 were selected to represent the typical condkions of the wetlands <br />extant. Sample point OX-1 is dominated by a Salixspecies, Sa6x exigua, and Comus sto/oni-era. Wetland <br />hydrology is expressed by a wetland drainage pattern and faint drift lines. The soils could not be <br />examined in this area due to the rock content (80-90+ percent) d the soil matrix A similar variety of <br />species, soil, and hydrologic factors characterize sample point OX-3. This wetland appears to be moving <br />to a more mesic condition with increasing distance from the creek channel. One sideslope wetland <br />dominated by Typha latiloliaand supported by ninon was also mapped. <br />In addition to the ten wetlands delineated in the field, d is estimated that 35 percent of banks of the <br />Elk Creek drainage channel have awetland fringe present which averages 4 feet in width. These wetlands <br />are too sma9, intermittent, and mixed with upland vegetation communities along the bank to delineate <br />each individually ~ this scale of mapping. These wetlands occur as individual dumps of C. sto/oni/era, <br />individual Sa/ixshrubs or P. angustiloliatrees, ar short (<10 feet) narrow bands of S. exigua. <br />Waters of the U. S. occur within the ~k Creek channel proper and are well defined in terms of an <br />observable bed and bank. Banks are typically short and rarely exceed 12 inches in height. The creek bed <br />'s composed prinariy of gravel- and cobble sized rock fragments.
